METAPHYSICAL MOVIE LIST AND REVIEW
Many films have supernatural or metaphysical plots, characters, and themes. It is part of the beauty of filmmaking that reality and fantasy can be successfully intertwined and, as a result, so widely entertaining. If you find yourself easily intrigued by such themes as intuition, ESP, energetic forces, ghosts, UFOs, and other unexplained phenomena that might spill out of the mysterious “X-Files,” then you may be attracted to the same kind of movies that I eat up like candy: the Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Poltergeist, King Kong, Contact, and the Sixth Sense, to name a few.
What lies beneath this fascination? Is it the knowledge that all of our dreams can somehow come true? Is it a desire to face the unknown and our fears in order to emerge victoriously over them? Or are we just bored with the mundane reality and provable facts of ordinary life? Whatever your reason, in honor of our interest in what I call “metaphysical movies,” I continue to compile this list of those that I have seen and, more importantly, that inspire me -- sometimes, to watch them over and over again.
FYI: I have concentrated on certain metaphysical aspects while forgoing practically the entire, ever-popular horror genre. Amityville Horror, Nightmare on Elm Street and the like, while to some degree entertaining, don’t contain the critical element of creative inspiration embodied by others that are more thought-provoking, and therefore this kind of film will not be found in the list. Also, I will attempt to keep the list in more or less chronological order, beginning with the most recent.
Finally, do come back and watch the Metaphysical Movie List and Review expand and deepen. The source of inspiration is full, yet always growing. . .
